For Visual Design Systems class, everyone was assigned to redesign the dollar. Students were allowed to choose any country of their choice or make up a nation of their own represented in their currency. The challenge behind this project was that we had to know the ground rules of what is the necessary information needed to make the dollar. However, we need to use our creativity and take inspiration from our interests to make a currency that has a design that does not exist in society.
Madonna was my inspiration for this project. Everyone knows her as the "Queen of Pop," but she is known as the "Queen of Humanity" for my currency project. If this dollar were to exist in today's society, I decided that this dollar is useful everywhere around the world, because many cultures and nations love Madonna. Madonna is rebellious by nature, but she is not afraid to stick up for her own beliefs, stand by people who are struggling in society, as well as, uses her art to make the world a safer and happier place.
To be a little more playful, I decided to make a chocolate bar and notebook accessory with the dollar because the class liked the idea of having Madonna on a dollar bill, so they thought edibles or other products should exist.
Rolling Stones Tropical Taboo Tour
The Rolling Stones had a tour in South America in 2015. One of the countries was Peru because Lima was one of the locations where the band was performing. The posters were taken inspiration from by Lima, Peru, and its culture.
The history of Lima, Peru has parallels with The Rolling Stones song, “Beasts of Burden.” A majority of the Rolling Stones’ music deals with humanities and social commentaries. To develop the concept of “Tropical Taboo Tour,” research was conducted to create visually appealing posters and postcards. The main bird in Peru is the Rupicola Peruvianus, which is Spanish for “Cock-of-the-Rock.” The bird has an authentic look, as well as a wicked personality. The attributes of the Rupicola Peruvianus aligns very well with the Rolling Stones music. To give the bird a little more character, lead singer Mick Jagger’s tongue is attached to the bird’s mouth for audiences to know that a worldwide known band is coming to their hometown. These distinct elements celebrate the culture of Peru.
Red Hill Magazine
Red Hill magazine focuses on music and different styles of art. A lot of musical artists dream of making it big in Hollywood, but it is a tough competition. Finding success is a struggle, so Red Hill Magazine recruits artists that they think should get a record and a presence on Itunes.
Red Hill interviews these artists to give readers in-depth insights about the musicians, their style of art, and inspiration. It helps give musical players advice on how to make it into the Hollywood industry. The character, Peyton Sawyer, from One Tree Hill was the primary inspiration for the name Red Hill. For anyone who is familiar with the show, she collected a lot of disk records and scouted out musicians as a hobby. The city of Beverly Hills also comes into play, with the magazine. The city is in Los Angeles County, California where a majority of the movie stars and top musicians live. A majority of artists dream of living in Beverly Hills, but the city is quite an impossible place to buy a house and settle in. Not only does the magazine focus on musicians, but it also gives readers information about upcoming music festivals and dance clubs.
The Great Typeface series was inspired by the Penguin Series. The Penguin Publishing Group is one of the leading trade book publishers in the United States, comprised of imprints with a long and rich history dating back to the nineteenth century. Penguin Books was originally founded in the UK in 1935 by Allen Lane, who envisioned a collection of quality, attractive books to be affordable. For this project, every had to look at how Penguin Books design their publishing content. The class had to research different type fonts. Based on the type fonts of our choice, we all voted for Minion Pro, Optima, and Futura typefaces. Afterwards, we had to make a design of our own into a book series. The Minion Typeface has been used in various places and companies such as Red Lobster, Gaylord Hotels, and SCAD. Robert Slimbach promoted this font in 1990 because Minion contains traditional text font that adapts well to today’s digital technology. Minion displays special qualities that make text type highly readable. Optima has been used in various places and companies such as Estee Lauder, Marks and Spencers, and Premier League. Heman Zapf promoted this font in 1955 because Optima contains a modulated stroke sans serif, a design type where the strokes are in variable in width. Futura has been used in various places and companies such as IKEA, Crayola, and Party City. Paul Renner promoted this font in 1927 because Futura contains efficiency and forwardness.
This was an assignment for Typography 2. The class had to interview people who they feel has a unique approach to art. Dylan Helyer and Jack Bunmapichaikorn are two male fashion designers who have a distinct taste in style.
They want to create clothes that suit both men and women. The designers believe that fashion is about expressing who you are on the inside, and no one should be feeling obligated to wear certain clothing items because of labels. Jack and Dylan challenge themselves to see how they can integrate workout clothes into the work force. They observe that women wear athletic pants as leggings and they see that sweatpants are becoming more stylish. They create suits that are as comfortable as sweatpants. The designers are even involved in costume making. They take inspirations from movies, such as "Chuckie" or "It", and create styles that have a “sexy” look.
Inc. Magazine Rebranding
Apparently, one of the issues of Inc. Magazine contained thick typography that was overwhelming and intervening with the central figures of the cover. Jessica Alba’s story with the Honest Company was used to re-brand Inc Magazine and come up with a better design solution. Jessica Alba’s story with the Honest Company showcases women in business. Her story empowers women to follow their passion and desire to start up a company based on their personal experiences. Jessica Alba started the Honest Company because she noticed how her daughters were catching allergic reactions to cleaning products that contain harsh chemicals. She thought that there should be products out there that contain more natural ingredients. However, a lot of natural cleaning products do not clean as well as regular cleaning supplies. Jessica Alba thought of a solution that there should be well-made cleaning supplies that contained more natural ingredients that prevent hazardous deaths.
Green Remedies is a car delivery service that wants to make cannabis available to patients who suffer from medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease, schizophrenia, or depression. It also instructs about what types of marijuana should be used to treat these conditions, and how to properly use the given cannabis products. Some patients may think that Green Remedies is a great tool to learn about how to select and use the proper medication to treat their condition.
On the other hand, there are medical marijuana users that think Green Remedies is pointless because there are already books, apps, and awareness campaigns that exist for the use of medical marijuana. There are a lot of complaints that it is difficult for patients to access medical marijuana. Usually, it is because the medical dispensaries that they are supposed to go are far away from their hometowns. Some patients complained how devastating it was that they had to drive 60 miles to get their medicine. Other patients complained that their conditions are so severe that it makes it impossible for them to get in their cars and drive to the medical dispensaries. Green Remedies is on a mission to make a car delivery service for patients who need the medical marijuana. The company wants to make it easier for patients who have difficulty getting the medication that they need to treat their conditions.
Veronica Crane is a wine company named after the legend of Veronica, a dark angel and warrior princess who belongs to a family of royalty in Tuscany, Italy. She is considered a threat to her kingdom because of her supernatural powers. She escapes from her castle and comes across a a ghost spirit named Irene. Veronica Crane was inspired by the movie Frozen, as well as the Greek goddess Athena. The story is set in Europe when the bubonic plague occurred. It mentioned a lot in history textbooks that Marco Polo went to China to bring some crops back into Europe, and that is when the bubonic plague began to spread. However, Veronica Crane’s story is a bit more complicated. Instead of Marco Polo coming to Europe to bring some crops, The Mongols are taking over Tuscany, but Veronica’s parents are aware of it. The Mongols want to spread the bubonic plague because they are upset that Italy isn’t granting them their grapes to make wine. How Veronica has come to know of this event was that Irene had her ways of communicating her sidekick powers to Veronica. She places her hand on top of Veronica’s forehead. Veronica has a vision that a group of Mongols is coming into Tuscany. It starts to rain heavily, and Veronica receives her wings from Irene to help her fly. She flew over back to Tuscany from the Dark Forest to warn the citizens to prepare for war. Veronica’s powers helped save Tuscany from the bubonic plague. The rain washed away the poison that the Mongols brought in, destroying the bacteria that was killing the grapes. Veronica not only saved her hometown, but she also produced the best wine.
Istanbul Olympics 2028
For this project, a lot of people had to create a logo, as well as, applications along with the logo to advertise about the Olympic event that occurred in Istanbul, Turkey. Everyone had to pick up elements from Turkey’s culture. To design the concept of the logo for the Olympics, research is conducted to create an extraordinary design. The logo contains the blue eye from the Hamsa Hand.
The blue eye is a universal symbol for the five main religions, which happen to be Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Turkey is known to be a very diverse and non-prejudice nation. Everyone is tolerant of each other and it common for people of various religions to worship with each other. For instance, a Christian is allowed to pray in a mosque, which is unique. Regardless of what religion person prays, the blue eye plays an enormous significance to the people of Turkey because it represents protection, luck, and sacrifice. The tulip is the main flower for Turkey. The blue eye is shaped like a tulip. The blue eyed tulip tilts like a teapot in order serve a drink to provides some form of “positive energy” to the athletes in the Olympics.
CJRW Internship Works
CJRW (Cranford Johnson Robinson Woods) is a full-service advertising, marketing and public relations firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. The agency’s creative and digital teams work together to develop ideas into campaigns that can be successfully implemented across all media platforms, including print, TV and radio as well as social. Some of the company’s largest accounts include the Department of Arkansas Parks and Tourism, the Arkansas State Lottery Commission, Visit Hot Springs and Oaklawn Racing and Gaming.
As an intern, I was assigned to the creative team and responsible for bringing my original ideas to the table. I was involved in brainstorming meetings and creative reviews and given time to work independently and collaboratively with the team.
One of my assignments was for Stamp Out Smoking, an award-winning public outreach campaign for the Arkansas Department of Health. I created a poster for SOS: My Reason to Write, an essay contest for grade school students. I incorporated a speech with rhymes into a shape of a pencil to emphasize the idea that “Graphite Can Kill a Toxic Parasite.” Another assignment was for Bark Bar, a dog-friendly pub in Little Rock. I created social media ads, a poster, rack cards and other collateral pieces for their “Calling all Ruff Runners!” and “Doggie Disco” events. I also assisted with design and editorial changes to the Arkansas Motorcycle Guide, a major publication for the Arkansas Parks and Tourism team.
These are just a few examples of how CJRW gave me hands-on experience of being in a workplace environment, being expected to contribute ideas, being asked to execute changes and client requests in a thoughtful but timely manner. This experience allowed me to see firsthand how an advertising agency works to develop and implement creative campaigns and marketing strategies from start to finish.
AY Magazine Internship Works
AY (About You) Magazine is lifestyle magazine that is part of the multimedia company called Vowel, Inc., located in Little Rock, Arkansas. AY Magazine focuses on the culture and lifestyle of the people in the state of Arkansas. During the time spent in this internship, the AY Magazine team had to work on the January Issue.
I did some collaboration work with the AY Magazine team on the cover, Hiking Arkansas’ Winter Wonderland, Sweet Pairings for Dessert, and the Skin Esthetics advertisement. The cover contains delicious pancakes that are the best in downtown Arkansas. The Hiking Arkansas’ Winter Wonderlands describe products from Osprey that are needed to survive winter season. The Sweet Pairings for Dessert is supposed to tell readers why Crimson is the best wine to eat sweets. Skin Esthetics relies on AY Magazine to make their ads about their plastic surgery services towards the citizens of Arkansas.
Nature Sauce, LLC
Nature Sauce is an LLC company that produces vegan pasta sauce. Its mission is to create a high quality, nutritious sauce that contain organic and all natural ingredients. A lot of pasta sauce brands displayed in supermarkets contain harsh chemicals that are hazardous to health. Nature Sauce cares about its components and quality of taste. Unlike any other food product, the company wants its customers to consume “actual fruits and vegetables,” rather than artificial sweeteners or preservatives.
For the package design, I created an image of a hand that is holding a bowl full of vegetables. The company and I intended to make the vegetables in color, while the hand was in black or white. We believe that if the vegetables were colorful, it would add more variation to the composition of the package as a whole. The design is supposed to have a “sophisticated” and “clean” look. The idea is that “less is more.” The simplicity of the typography, as well as, the black and white image of the hand demonstrates that Nature Sauce does not produce any complex ingredients to its products. The black background demonstrates the idea that if you let vegetables grow in its natural cycle “throughout the day and night,” then there is no need to add artificial preservatives. Dark light can produce nutritious foods on its own.
